Tartarus brew small batch craft beer with – as they say – a mythical edge.Tartarus sprang to life a few years back now, and was one of those breweries that developed a name for itself instantly. It’s hard to say why – but, when you think about is, Tartarus is a little different to most craft breweries.
When the brewery first arrived onto the beer scene, hazy New England IPAs were the name of the game. For many, they very much still are. Tartarus sidestepped that. Instead, they focused on a two pronged approach of Belgian-style beers with a modern twist and – where they really made a name for themselves – big, high-ABV, decadent and indulgent stouts and dark beers.
The biggest of the lot, and now an annual classic, is Hazelnut Abaddon, a 17% (yes, really) hazelnut stout that’s really the jewel in the Tartarus crown.
That said though, Tartarus’s Krampus Christmas Cake Porter is magnificent come Christmas (or aged after, as we can testify), and those into their European beers will definitely want to check out some of Tartarus’s hat-tips to strong beers from the continent.
“A nano brewery that specialises in strong and European styles of beer” is what they say – and it’s on the money. Fun fact: Tartarus is named after the dark and gloomy part of the realm of Hades, which mythology suggests was reserved for the damned and the wicked. With the beers Tartarus produce, you have to admit that’s apt.
